About this role
Axios is seeking a senior Staff Software Engineer to lead architecture and delivery for its core products across multiple teams. The role is a hands-on individual contributor focused on product-engineering and AI-native practices, with responsibility for architecture, quality, security, and system reliability. The position involves cross-team technical leadership, owning architecture for a product area, and guiding AI-enabled product and engineering efforts, without people management duties. You will collaborate with product managers, designers, engineers, and leaders to shape plans, resolve ambiguity, and drive multi-quarter initiatives. The starting salary is in the range of $165,000 to $215,000, with remote options mentioned in the advert.
What you would do
- Lead mission-critical or high-risk initiatives spanning multiple teams and connected systems.
- Own architecture for a product area and establish scalable boundaries across frontend, APIs, data, and production systems.
- Write and review code, prototype, debug, lead migrations, and operate services in production.
- Identify where models, agents, retrieval, or automation create value and build reusable capabilities with guardrails.
- Improve testing, performance, observability, security, and operational readiness; lead incident resolution and learning.
- Mentor mid- and senior-level engineers and promote alignment through proposals and reviews.
- Partner with product, design, and engineering leaders to shape the product-area roadmap and connect technical work to business outcomes.
What they are asking for
- Typically 7+ years in professional software development or equivalent sustained staff-level impact.
- Hands-on experience with AI-native development and agentic coding tools.
- Ability to write clear strategies, specifications, and acceptance criteria; provide context and scope complex work.
- Experience reviewing AI-generated code for security, scalability, and maintainability risks.
- Frontend experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and React (preferably Next.js).
- Backend experience building production services and APIs; comfortable with Go or Python.
- Experience with relational databases, SQL, schema design, transactions, and migrations.
- Knowledge of testing, accessibility, authentication, authorization, and web security practices.
- Strong independent operation in ambiguity and ability to align teams and make sound tradeoffs.
- Good communication skills to build alignment and explain risks and tradeoffs.
