Specialist - Database Administration

About this role

Alphabeta Consulting LLP is recruiting a Specialist in Database Administration for their Technology department in Lagos. The role focuses on designing, implementing, securing, monitoring and maintaining Microsoft SQL Server databases, with hands-on SQL development including writing and optimising stored procedures. The successful candidate will ensure database availability, performance, security and data integrity to support business applications and objectives. Responsibilities involve building and maintaining database structures, tuning performance, managing backups and disaster recovery, enforcing security, and collaborating with IT and development teams. The position requires extensive experience with SQL Server and SQL development, and exposure to supporting application projects.

What you would do

• Design, develop and implement database structures aligned with requirements.
• Install, configure, upgrade, administer and maintain Microsoft SQL Server systems.
• Write, test, debug and optimise T-SQL queries and stored procedures.
• Develop and maintain database objects such as views, functions and triggers.
• Analyse query plans, optimise queries and implement indexing strategies.
• Monitor database performance and address bottlenecks for high availability.
• Manage backup, recovery, storage, archiving and disaster recovery procedures.
• Implement database security controls including user access management.
• Troubleshoot database issues and support incident resolution.
• Prepare reports on database usage, performance, security and maintenance.

• Bachelor’s Degree or HND in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field.
• 7–10 years of hands-on database administration experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
• Proven experience in designing, installing, configuring, administering and tuning databases.
• Experience with query plans, indexing, transaction management and performance optimisation.
• Strong knowledge of database security, backup/recovery and high availability.
• Experience supporting application development projects and collaborating with tech teams.
• Relevant database administration certifications; Oracle/MySQL/PostgreSQL knowledge is a plus.
