About this role
Supabase is seeking engineers to help build Spark, a lightweight Rust implementation with an embedded SQLite-based engine and a Postgres-compatible SQL layer. The role involves extending API compatibility, contributing to the Supabase stack on Turso/SQLite, and improving upgrade paths from Spark to full Supabase. It is a founding, end-to-end ownership position in a small, remote-friendly team with significant autonomy. The role emphasises developer experience, testing, and working with design partners and the open-source community. This is a fully remote, globally distributed opportunity with equity and a focus on compatibility and correctness.
What you would do
- Improve API compatibility with the Supabase client and maintain conformance tests
- Extend the Supabase stack to Turso/SQLite
- Identify and fix gaps in the underlying database engine with minimal repros and tests
- Develop and strengthen the upgrade path from Spark to full Supabase
- Own the developer experience end-to-end including CLI, local tooling, and documentation
- Contribute to hosted offering while maintaining low costs and modular design
- Collaborate with design partners to address real-world migration and integration issues
- Engage with the open-source community and contribute to the broader Supabase stack
- Work on a founding team in an early-stage, remote setup
- Communicate clearly in written form
What they are asking for
- Strong backend or full-stack experience with Rust, with production Rust shipped
- Experience building or contributing to backend systems, frameworks, or developer platforms
- Generalist capable of working across API design, storage internals, and infrastructure
- Solid SQL and relational database foundation; familiarity with transactions, MVCC, type systems
- Knowledge of Postgres and its behavior; familiarity with Postgres and SQLite differences
- Experience running services under tight resource limits (multi-tenant, serverless, or embedded)
- Bias toward compatibility and correctness with emphasis on tests and specs
- Ability to read unfamiliar code and study reference implementations in other languages
- Comfort working in public repositories on a remote, async team
- Clear written communication; willingness to work in an early-stage, ambiguous environment
