Software Engineer - Functions (Compute)
About this role
Supabase is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to contribute to the Compute platform, built on Firecracker microVMs. The role involves designing and improving the Compute runtime, adding monitoring and tracing, and collaborating with open-source teams. You will participate in on-call rotations, help extend features like scheduled functions and WebSockets, and integrate Compute with Auth, Postgres, Storage, and Realtime. The position targets backend or systems engineers with strong Rust and TypeScript skills and experience operating large-scale infrastructure. What you would do
- Help design and build the Supabase Compute platform based on Firecracker microVMs
- Implement monitoring, alerting, and OpenTelemetry tracing across the runtime
- Collaborate with Firecracker, Deno, and other open-source teams and relay user requirements
- Participate in an on-call rotation to maintain Compute in production
- Help manage features such as scheduled functions, background tasks, WebSockets streaming, ephemeral storage, and custom routing
- Integrate Compute more closely with Auth, Postgres, Storage, and Realtime
- Expand the Compute runtime to support more use cases (e.g., AI inference, MCP servers, simple websites, URL shorteners)
- Improve developer experience and debugging of Compute locally via the Supabase CLI and DevTools integration
- Contribute to upstream projects and drive improvements based on user needs
- Contribute to scalable infrastructure and internal tooling as part of the team

- At least 5 years of backend or systems engineering experience
- Strong fluency in Rust and TypeScript
- Experience with Firecracker, V8 Isolates, Deno, and related runtime isolation tech
- Experience operating infrastructure at scale (e.g., Kubernetes, AWS EC2/Lambda/MicroVM, Cloudflare Workers, Redis)
- A clear vision for pushing compute and data to the edge
- Bonus: experience building developer-facing CLIs or front-end tooling for infrastructure products
