SDK Engineer - Python

About this role

A software role for developers to build and maintain the Python Software Development Kit (SDK) for Supabase. The role focuses on enabling Python developers to interact with Supabase services via a Python library, with both synchronous and asynchronous APIs. The position involves contributing to an open-source project, collaborating with multiple internal teams and the community, and shaping the SDK to scale for many users and AI agents.

What you would do

• Develop and evolve the Python SDK across database, auth, storage, realtime and functions with sync and async APIs.
• Identify gaps and propose and build new features beyond maintenance.
• Triage issues, review contributions, maintain CI and release processes, and manage project scope.
• Own the typing experience to ensure the SDK is fully typed and friendly to static analysis.
• Ensure compatibility across Python versions, frameworks, and environments; test thoroughly.
• Work on realtime features such as websockets, reconnection, and subscription semantics.
• Keep the SDK updated with platform changes and document them in changelogs.
• Contribute to design work, including RFCs, migration guides, and release notes.
• Make the SDK understandable to AI coding agents and other developers.

• Strong knowledge of modern Python typing (generics, protocols, overloads, TypedDict).
• Experience authoring or maintaining a published library with a public API.
• Experience with open source maintenance including issue triage, PR reviews, and release automation.
• Fluent in asyncio and supporting both sync and async usage in libraries.
• Experience with Python packaging (pyproject.toml, wheels, tooling, dependency policies).
• Experience testing (unit, type-level, end-to-end) with real stack coverage and regression tests.
• Strong communication skills for documentation, changelogs, and public discussions.
• Ability to work autonomously, scope work, and deliver with stakeholder communication.
• Experience working in async or globally distributed teams.
• Bonus: experience with major-version migrations, JWT/OAuth, AI agent frameworks, or schema-based client generation.
