About this role
The role is for a mid-senior level Residue Gas Compressor Operator at SEEPCO, based in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. The job focuses on operating and optimising residue gas and related compressors within an integrated ammonia/urea production facility, with emphasis on maintaining process safety, asset integrity and energy efficiency. The operator will work with DCS systems and field equipment to manage compression, anti-surge controls, dry gas seals, and related rotating equipment, contributing to flare reduction and fuel optimisation. It requires experience in large-scale ammonia, urea or fertiliser plants, specifically with multi-stage centrifugal compressors, and a strong HSE culture. The employer operates within the oil and gas and fertiliser sectors and uses digital work management for maintenance and safety processes.
What you would do
- Operate and monitor Residue Gas and related compressors from DCS or field equipment.
- Control critical parameters such as anti-surge systems, dry gas seals and lubrication, and monitor vibration and protection systems.
- Analyse compressor performance and adjust operations to maximise throughput while avoiding surge or damage.
- Manage compression of ammonia synthesis loop purge gas and tail gas to support fuel recovery and energy efficiency goals.
- Coordinate with process engineers to optimise synthesis loop pressure and gas recovery.
- Conduct start-ups, normal operations, and emergency shutdowns according to SOPs and OEM guidelines.
- Utilise CMMS to raise and track work orders, document histories and manage spares.
- Support reliability and maintenance activities including RCA, MOC, and major turnarounds.
- Promote safety practices, participate in JSA/HAZID/Toolbox talks and operate in Hazardous Areas per standards.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to a safety-first, continuous improvement culture.
What they are asking for
- OND, HND, BEng/BSc in Mechanical, Chemical or Gas Engineering or equivalent rotating equipment certification.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on operation as a panel/field operator or rotating equipment specialist in ammonia, urea, fertiliser or petrochemical plants.
- Experience operating multi-stage centrifugal compressors (syngas, residue gas, refrigerant or air).
- Strong knowledge of compressor thermodynamics, anti-surge logic, performance mapping and dry gas seal systems.
- Familiarity with Machinery Protection Systems and ITCC systems (e.g., Woodward, Bently Nevada, GE Mark VI).
- Ability to read P&IDs, performance curves, lube oil schematics and cause-effect matrices.
- Certifications: HSE Level 1-3, Process Safety Management awareness; CompEx or hazardous area certification is a plus; BOSIET/HUET and offshore medical if required.
- Willingness to work in rotating shifts and adhere to safety standards.
