Report / BI Engineer
About this role
Turnkey Africa Limited is seeking an entry level Report / BI Engineer to join the Evolve team in Lagos. The role involves implementing backend changes in Java and Spring Boot, building and maintaining services, and developing REST APIs and SQL queries under guidance. You will work with backend and frontend engineers, QA, and product teams to deliver features, fixes and tests for an insurance management platform. The opportunity is suitable for candidates with internship, academic or personal project experience, with growth toward a full software engineering role as you gain independence and contribute to larger tasks. Training and support from experienced team members are provided, with a focus on secure practices and understanding insurance workflows. Career progression moves toward Associate Software Engineer based on performance and business needs.
What you would do
- Build and maintain Evolve services
- Develop assigned features and bug fixes in Java and Spring Boot to designs and acceptance criteria
- Develop and update REST APIs and SQL queries
- Learn platform data structures and ensure validation, error handling and data consistency
- Agree API contracts with frontend engineers and maintain accurate OpenAPI documentation
- Test changes and participate in code reviews
- Write and maintain unit and integration tests for changes
- Collaborate with QA to reproduce defects and verify fixes
- Submit changes through Git branches and pull requests
- Explain approach, incorporate feedback and keep technical documentation current
What they are asking for
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or related field, or equivalent practical training
- Foundational Java skills and familiarity with Spring Boot from coursework, internships or projects
- Understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms and debugging
- Basic knowledge of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON, relational databases and SQL, and Git
- Ability to write basic automated tests and explain code
