About this role
Supabase is hiring experienced performance engineers to identify and implement performance improvements across its distributed stack, from the query optimiser to kernel and network layers. This is a performance delivery role focused on measurable gains to the database, platform, and APIs as the company scales. The role involves joining a new performance team and helping define how performance engineering works at Supabase. Candidates will work with database and infrastructure teams, develop methodologies and tooling, and partner with observability to provide a unified view of platform performance. The position is fully remote with global hiring, and the team emphasises practical impact and cross-team collaboration.
What you would do
- Identify bottlenecks in live production systems and characterise them for owning teams to act on without ongoing involvement.
- Collaborate with database and infra teams to implement concrete performance improvements.
- Develop, communicate, and evolve performance methodologies and tooling based on production data.
- Work with the observability team to capture signals and create a unified view of performance across products.
- Help teams self-serve performance analysis and prioritise performance as a core engineering concern.
What they are asking for
- Deep experience in performance engineering for complex distributed systems.
- Ability to trace performance issues across the stack from query planning to IO and network paths.
- Expertise in Linux kernel internals or database internals with strong depth in at least one area.
- Strong knowledge of networking and cloud infrastructure performance, including TCP, AWS primitives, and cross-AZ latency.
- Proven ability to translate performance insights into product and architectural improvements and prioritise fixes across teams.
- Clear, precise written communication describing problem characterisations and reproducible results.
- Pragmatic, tooling-oriented mindset with experience working across product, infra, and database teams.
