Legal and Compliance Associate

About this role

Role: Legal and Compliance Associate at OBSIDIAN Capital Limited in Lagos. The position is for an experienced legal and compliance professional who will serve as the firm’s internal legal adviser, handling corporate, contract and regulatory matters and implementing data privacy and AML compliance programmes across the organisation.

What you would do

• Lead the process of obtaining financial licenses and registrations for current and future products, liaising with regulatory bodies and ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Draft, negotiate and review internal and external contracts and corporate governance documents to align protections with business objectives.
• Provide legal guidance on corporate governance, regulatory compliance and other internal legal matters, including contracts, employment and financial issues.
• Manage real estate matters for the firm, including title verification, land title registration, conveyancing documents and contract negotiations.
• Lead responses to regulatory inquiries, audits, data breaches or legal proceedings, and coordinate with external counsel as needed.
• Develop and oversee the firm’s compliance programme, including AML/KYC frameworks, policy development, training, incident management and regulatory filings; monitor regulatory changes.

What they are asking for

• Minimum of five years of experience in a legal position.
• 1–2 years financial services industry experience is a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree in Law; JD or LLB preferred.
• Licensed solicitor with Nigerian Bar Association membership.
• Proven experience as a legal counsel or in a corporate environment; strong knowledge of corporate, contract and regulatory compliance law.
• Strong legal research, analytical and contract negotiation skills; ability to provide sound legal advice.
