General Counsel (Legal, Compliance & Regulatory Affairs)
About this role
Carbon Nigeria, based in Lagos, is hiring a General Counsel (Legal, Compliance & Regulatory Affairs). The role will be Carbon's most senior legal and regulatory voice, advising the CEO, executive committee and board, and leading legal, compliance and regulatory work across the company, including regulator engagement.
What you would do
- Advise the CEO, ExCo and Board on strategy, new products, partnerships, capital and M&A.
- Structure deals and products to ensure they are compliant, commercial and defensible.
- Own AML/CFT/CPF, KYC, sanctions, consumer protection and data protection frameworks; keep compliance risk-based and embedded in product and engineering workflows.
- Lead regulatory engagement with the CBN, NFIU, FCCPC, NDPC and other regulators; manage examinations, licences and sensitive correspondence.
- Ensure board and committee governance meets regulatory requirements and act as Company Secretary on board papers, resolutions and regulatory filings.
- Manage disputes and enforcement; oversee external counsel; draft, negotiate and sign off commercial agreements; maintain a central contract repository with clear ownership, renewals and obligations monitoring; standardise templates and workflows.
What they are asking for
- LL.B and B.L; called to the Nigerian Bar with a minimum of 10 years' post-call experience.
- Substantial experience in financial services, with fintech, digital lending, payments or digital banking exposure.
- Track record of direct, senior-level engagement with the CBN and other financial regulators.
- Deep knowledge of CBN regulations, BOFIA 2020, MLPPA 2022, NDPA 2023, FCCPA and consumer lending rules.
- Experience leading a legal and/or compliance team.
- Fit and proper, and able to meet any CBN approval requirements for the role.
