Finance Assistant

About this role

The role is for a Finance Assistant at Novel Alliance for Development Aid (NADA), based in Sokoto. It involves supporting the finance team with processing transactions, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with organisational and donor requirements. The position is a six-month assignment reporting to another Finance Assistant. NADA is a national NGO established in 2017 to provide humanitarian and development services across northeast and northwest Nigeria.

What you would do

• Verify and prepare payment vouchers with complete supporting documents.
• Enter transactions into the accounting system and maintain cashbooks and ledgers.
• Assist in managing petty cash including cash counts and replenishments.
• Support monthly bank reconciliations and preparation of monthly financial reports.
• Process staff advances, travel claims and per diems, and track retirement of advances.
• Assist with payroll data preparation and filing of statutory deductions and remittances.
• Maintain organised filing of financial records for audit and donor review.
• Support audits and spot checks by retrieving documents as requested.
• Respond to queries from staff, vendors and partners on payments and procedures.
• Uphold safeguarding, anti-fraud and anti-corruption standards and report irregularities.

What they are asking for

• OND, HND or bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Banking and Finance, Business Administration or related field.
• At least 1 year of relevant experience in accounting or finance, preferably with an NGO or donor-funded organisation.
• Basic knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; familiarity with accounting software (e.g., Sage, QuickBooks) is an advantage.
• Strong attention to detail, numeracy and record-keeping skills.
• Good communication skills and ability to follow procedures accurately.
• Proficiency in English; knowledge of Hausa is an added advantage.
• Desirable: part-qualification or progress towards ICAN, ANAN or ACCA.
• Experience working in Sokoto or northern Nigeria and understanding of donor financial compliance requirements.
