Consultant Anaesthetist
About this role
The African Medical Centre of Excellence Abuja is seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist to provide expert anaesthetic care for patients undergoing surgical and diagnostic procedures in the Cardiovascular & Theatres directorate. The role involves leading anaesthesia teams and ensuring patient safety and high-quality perioperative care in AMCE's 500-bed Abuja hospital.
What you would do
- Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments including airway evaluation and risk stratification.
- Administer general, regional, and sedation anaesthesia as required, with emphasis on cardiovascular procedures.
- Monitor vital signs and anaesthetic depth during procedures and respond promptly to changes.
- Provide immediate post-operative care, including pain management and management of acute complications, coordinating with ICU teams and ERAS pathways.
- Lead a team of junior anaesthetists, resident doctors, and anaesthesia technicians during procedures.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and participate in incident reporting and quality improvement activities.
What they are asking for
- MBBS/MD or equivalent from a recognised institution.
- Board certification in Anaesthesiology (FWACS in Anaesthesiology, FMCNA, or equivalent).
- Valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria (or eligible to obtain one).
- Minimum of 5 years' post-fellowship experience in a hospital setting, preferably with exposure to a high-volume cardiovascular unit.
- Substantial experience in general anaesthesia with focus on cardiovascular procedures; expertise in regional anaesthesia (ultrasound-guided), difficult airway management, and perioperative critical care.
- Postgraduate qualifications in medical education, patient safety, simulation training, or healthcare management are highly desirable.
