Backend Engineer
About this role
Turnkey Africa Limited is looking for a backend engineer to join their team in Lagos. The role targets entry-level candidates with internship, academic, or personal project experience and involves owning assigned backend features, bug fixes, testing, and release support within the Evolve platform. Evolve is Turnkey Africa’s insurance management platform built on Spring Boot with Angular and Next.js frontends, used by clients across Africa. The engineer will work with other engineers, QA, and product teams to implement features, test changes, and ensure data integrity and secure practices. Growth is possible towards an Associate Software Engineer based on performance and business needs.
What you would do
- Agree API contracts with frontend engineers and maintain accurate OpenAPI documentation for changed endpoints.
- Build assigned features and bug fixes in Java and Spring Boot according to designs and acceptance criteria.
- Develop and update REST APIs and SQL queries.
- Learn platform data structures and ensure validation, error handling and data consistency under guidance.
- Test changes and participate in code reviews by submitting small, reviewable changes via Git branches and PRs.
- Explain approach, apply feedback, and keep technical documentation up to date.
- Write and maintain unit and integration tests covering normal, boundary, and failure cases.
- Collaborate with QA to reproduce defects and verify fixes.
- Investigate issues using approved tools, logs, and test environments; communicate findings clearly.
- Assist with release preparation and deployment checks under guidance and understand impact on users and insurance processes.

- Clear written and verbal communication, attention to detail and a collaborative approach.
