Backend Engineer
About this role
Turnkey Africa Limited seeks a Backend Engineer to join its Evolve team in Lagos. The role involves implementing backend changes, building and maintaining Java Spring Boot services, and developing REST APIs and SQL queries. You will work with backend and frontend engineers, QA, and product teams, under guidance from a Technical Lead, with growth prospects toward Associate Software Engineer and potential move toward full-stack work. What you would do
- Build and maintain Evolve services in Java and Spring Boot
- Develop and update REST APIs and SQL queries
- Learn platform data structures and ensure validation and data consistency
- Agree API contracts with frontend engineers and keep OpenAPI docs accurate
- Test changes and participate in code reviews
- Write unit and integration tests for changes
- Work with QA to reproduce defects and verify fixes
- Submit small, reviewable changes via Git branches and pull requests
- Explain approach, apply feedback and keep technical documentation current
- Investigate issues using approved tools and log environments and escalate high-risk problems
What they are asking for
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or related field, or equivalent practical training with relevant projects
- Foundational Java skills and familiarity with Spring Boot
- Understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms and debugging
- Basic knowledge of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON, relational databases and SQL, and Git
- Ability to write basic automated tests and explain code
- Clear written and verbal communication, attention to detail and collaborative approach
- Willingness to learn and follow secure coding practices
- Nice to have: exposure to Hibernate/JPA, basic frontend exposure (TypeScript, Angular or Next.js), familiarity with Postman/OpenAPI/CI/CD, interest in insurance systems
