Analytics Engineer / Data Analyst

About this role

HerVest in Lagos is hiring an Analytics Engineer / Data Analyst. The role focuses on owning the Metabase BI layer, building dashboards and data models, and writing optimized SQL across PostgreSQL and MySQL to turn raw data into reporting metrics, while liaising with engineering and business stakeholders.

What you would do

• Administer the Metabase instance as the primary BI layer.
• Build dashboards and configure native SQL queries into reusable Metabase models; set up field filters for non-technical users.
• Write complex, performant SQL (CTEs, window functions, JSONB extraction) in PostgreSQL and MySQL to transform raw data into reporting tables.
• optimise query performance using EXPLAIN ANALYZE, identify bottlenecks, and suggest indexing strategies to avoid production locks.
• Map new features' data and expose it in Metabase, acting as the translation layer between engineering and business stakeholders.
• Manage data governance including SSO, user permissions and data dictionaries to ensure secure access.

• 3+ years of production-grade SQL experience; highly proficient in PostgreSQL and MySQL.
• Deep Metabase expertise: building dashboards, writing native SQL in Metabase, configuring variables and managing environments.
• Strong understanding of relational database architecture, foreign keys, normalization, and performance implications of querying live replicas.
• Analytical mindset with ability to translate business questions into data visualisation and analysis.
• Self-starter who can work independently in a fast-paced environment and own the data visualisation pipeline.
• Nice-to-haves: experience with Git for SQL scripts, dbt, Python (Pandas/FastAPI) or TypeScript, and prior startup experience.
